From pragmatic-stylistic perspective, the study examines the concept of motherhood in Bertolt Brecht’s play “Mother Courage and Her Children,” as an attempt to fill a research gap in this field. The study focuses on analyzing speech acts, principles of cooperation, as well as stylistic devices, so as to reveal mother’s vision and conflicts. The study adopted a qualitative-quantitative approach by analyzing (38) scenes from the play, based on established pragmatic and stylistic models.
It is found out that dramatic actions and effectiveness of stylistic devices in highlighting emotional contradictions are common. It is also revealed implications of mother’s motivations and societal pressures, which contributes to deepen audience’s understanding of complexities of motherhood experience in times of conflict.
