The Faculty of Science at the University of Kerbala has held a seminar entitled “The Relative Theory between Theory and Practice”, which has been attended by a group of department professors and graduate students.it has been delivered by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mahmoud Abdel-Latif.
The lecturer says that the theory of relativity is one of the greatest achievements of the human mind throughout the ages. Together with quantum theory, it forms the basis of modern physics.
He adds that the lecture shows the special theory of relativity which is one of the most important results at this time is relative and not absolute, as time slows down in moving axes at high speed compared to fixed axes.
This has been demonstrated in practice by accelerating the atoms to very fast speeds close to the speed of light. One of the results of special relativity is that increasing the velocity leads to a shortening in length and an increase in mass. This result has been verified in practice by accelerating electrons to a tremendous velocity close to 99% of the speed of light, as their mass increased by several times the mass of static electrons, and that one of the most important results of special relativity as well as the famous relationship that connects mass to energy according to which the energy produced in the sun and stars, which is transmitted through the universe, , it is the starting point for the establishment of nuclear reactors and the production of nuclear weapons.
He also indicates that the lecture deals with general relativity, which concerns the axes that move relative to each other quickly. One of its most important results is that space is curving near the celestial bodies of enormous masses so that they predict the direction of the path of light when it passes near these bodies. This result has been verified in practice by two astronomical missions by observing the deviation of the path of light coming from the stars as it approaches the sun during a total solar eclipse. The other result of general relativity is that time is slowing down in celestial bodies of enormous masses. This was verified by observing the vibrations coming from the Sirius star, which is estimated to be 25,000 times as intense as the sun, as it was observed that the time of the vibrations coming from this star is greater than those observed on Earth. .
