Faculty of Engineering/ University of Kerbala has investigated behavior of transversely curved concrete beams containing openings and reinforced with polymeric carbon fiber sheets.
Faculty of Engineering has discussed the M.A. thesis which is entitled (Behavior of hollow steel sections strengthened with CFRP). It is presented by Sajjad Firas Abdul-Amir.
The discussion aims at studying structural behavior of those beams under the influence of load and the importance and methods of using them.
The thesis includes a laboratory study and a numerical study, where practical part includes casting and testing models, and the laboratory results indicates that the presence of four vertical or horizontal slots in continuous curved beams led to a decrease in the final load capacity by 21.98% and 10.4%, respectively, compared to the reference beam.
The use of CFRP slats around the openings as external reinforcement increases final load of lintels with vertical and horizontal openings by 19.32% and 6.13%, respectively, when compared to the unreinforced lintels.
While the numerical study has adopted the use of a three-dimensional model of finite elements to simulate all laboratory thresholds through the ABAQUS / Standard 2021 program.
Numerical study includes the effect of some variables on the response of horizontally curved reinforced concrete beams, including the effect of the number of openings and the effect of the diameter of the opening.
Finally, when comparing the two studies, the failure form for all beams is identical, with a slight difference for the load-precipitation curve.
