Two Researchers from University of Kerbala Obtain a Patent for Manufacturing New Polymeric Mixtures to Absorb Water from Crude Oil

Asst. Prof. Dr. Farhan Lafta Rashid and Lect. Dr. Salem Jawad Kadhim, College of Engineering, University of Kerbala, obtain a patent from Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control for patents for their ability to manufacture new polymeric mixtures to absorb water from crude oil.
The patent includes a study of physical and structural properties of prepared polymeric mixtures. The results show that polymeric mixtures manufactured from polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene glycol at a weight ratio of 60% of polyvinyl alcohol and 40% of polyethylene glycol have high absorption of water present in the crude oil samples under study and a high ability to retain it.
The patent consists of preparing polymeric mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene glycol with a weight ratio of 60% of polyvinyl alcohol and 40% of polyethylene glycol, and polyvinylpyrrolidinone (PVP) is added at different weight concentrations of (10, 20, 30)%.
5- The patent is used (mentioned above)
The patent aims at absorbing water present in crude oil due to the major problems caused by water accompanying crude oil during extraction or transporting it by pipelines and even in storage sites, and at forefront of these problems are corrosion of pipes and tanks and other problems. Therefore, new polymeric mixtures are prepared that are low-cost, organic in origin, light in weight, reduce the viscosity of crude oil, and have a high ability to absorb and retain water.
The researchers had obtained previous patents, the latest is a patent for the use of complex nanoparticles of (silica-magnesium oxide) to reduce the viscosity of Iraqi crude oil.
