The current study tackled a prominent political figure that left a remarkable impact on British history during Victorian era (1837 – 1901); he was the political figure John Russell who entered policy field since beginnings of his youth and was able to become one of the liberty party leaders who occupied many positions due to his qualifications.
The study consisted of an introduction, six chapters, and conclusion. The first chapter which is entitled ‘ the social biography of John Russell before his entrance to the policy field in 1813 ‘ mentioned his birth, growth, education, marriage and his visits to Portuguese in the years 1806 – 1809 – 1814. The first section tackled birth of John Russell and his growth. The second section stated learning and marriage of John Russell. The third section clarified visits of John Russell to some European countries from 1807 to 1809.
The second chapter shed the light on the political activation of John Russell since his assumption parliament membership until his assumption ministry of interior from 1813 to 1835. The chapter was divided into two sections. The first section discussed the beginning of John Russell’s political work (1813 – 1829). The second section discussed the role of John Russell in deciding the parliament reform project in 1832.
The second chapter stated the political life of John Russell since his assumption of parliament membership until his entrance to the government of Earl Gray (1813 – 1829); it was divided into two sections. The first section treated beginning of the political work of John Russell ( 1813 – 1817) stating the way of obtaining parliament membership and beginning of his political work in the House of Commons. The second section discussed the role of John Russell in deciding the parliament reform project in 1832.
The third chapter was about the role of John Russell in the British policy since his assumption to the ministry of interior until the fall of Robert Bell’s second government (1835 – 1846); it was divided into three sections. The first section studied the most important achievement that John Russell had achieved when he became minister of interior (1835- 1839) when he could, through the policy he adopted, spread security and order in the capital London and other regions. The second section, which is entitled ‘ the policy adopted by John Russell when he became minister of war and colonies (August 1939 – August 1841) stating the great effort that John Russell spent for the Britain common benefit. The third section was about the role of John Russell in supporting the second government of Lord Melbourne and his joining the opponent after its fall (1841- 1846).
The fourth chapter tackled the political work of John Russell during his assumption to be prime ministers for the first time (1846 – 1852). It clarified the most important challenges that had faced John Russell during his assumption to be prime ministers for the first time. It was divided into three sections. The first section, which was entitled the challenges that faced John Russell in 1846 clarifying the most important attributes that John Russell to be a candidate for government presidency. The second section was entitled ‘ stands of John Russell from Irish case’. The third section discussed stands of John Russell from Catholic and causes of his resign. It is in turn was divided into two items; the first was about the relationship of John Russell with British Catholic’s demand while the second clarified reasons of his resign from government presidency.
The fifth chapter studied the political role of John Russell since his assumption of ministry of interior until his heading to the ministry for the second time (1852 – 1865), it was divided into four sections. The first section was entitled ‘ the role of John Russell in British colony since his assumption ministry of foreign affairs till the end of Crimea war (1852 – 1856). The second section stated the stand of John Russell from Suez channel project. The third chapter shed the light on assumption of John Russell to the position of minister of foreign affairs during government of Palmerston and his stand of Syrian crisis. The fourth section was about the role of John Russell towards the American civil war 1861.
The sixth chapter discussed the political role of John Russell since his assumption of government presidency for the second time until his death (1865- 1878), it was divided into three sections. The first section was about the role of John Russell in British policy since his assumption of ministry of interior until his heading to the ministry for the second time until the resign of first Gladstone’s ministry (1865 – 1874). The second section showed the most important thoughts that John Russell displayed in his publications. The third section was entitled the health deterioration and death of John Russell.
Concerning the conclusion, the study displayed the great role of John Russell during the period (1792 – 1878).
