University of Kerbala Discussing an M.A Thesis entitled “A Pragma-Stylistic Study of Persecution in CNN and BBC News Reports on the Gaza Crisis”

Investigating the problem of Gasa, College of Education for Humanities has discussed the M.A thesis which is entitled ” A Pragma-Stylistic Study of Persecution in CNN and BBC News Reports on the Gaza Crisis”.
The study, which has been presented by Abbas Abdul Razzaq Hashim, attempt to shed light on how pragmatic and stylistic strategies are used in news discourse to construct meanings related to persecution. It also attempts to finds out a nexus between pragmatics and stylistics to analyze media texts, providing insights into how language encodes ideological positions in conflict coverage.
The study concludes that CNN and BBC used pragmatic strategies and linguistic techniques such as lexical choices, passive voice, euphemisms, and quotation patterns to highlight themes related to oppression. Both agencies also constructed images of victimhood, legitimacy, and bias. However, CNN tended to focus more directly on Palestinian suffering, while BBC maintained a relatively moderate tone.
