Strategic Studies Center /University of Kerbala organizes its fifth international scientific conference, with participation of a number of professors and researchers from inside and outside Iraq.
The conference focuses on developing radical solutions and proposing effective treatments for climate change problems in Iraq by discussing various problems and challenges related to climate change, such as desertification, rising temperatures, and declining water resources.
It includes (40) researchers from inside and outside Iraq. Their contributions discussed various political, economic, and legal themes.
Delivering his speech, President of University of Kerbala Prof. Dr. Sabah Wajid Ali states that climate change has become a pressing reality that imposes its presence on details of daily life, from water scarcity to desertification and sandstorms.
He emphasizes that are is an urgent need for such conferences to provide practical, applicable solutions and to be a conscious scientific voice that reflects reality of these challenges. He notes that the university encourages integration of environmental sustainability topics into curricula and research programs.
For his part, head of Higher Education Committee, Provincial Council, Dr. Mohsin Al-Kinani, highlights that humans exacerbating deteriorating climate conditions, particularly in Karbala, where many orchards and green areas have been razed.
Dr. Nasr Al-Husseini, Strategic Studies Center , reveals that loss of (60) thousand dunums of agricultural land in Iraq and (30) thousand trees due to low rainfall, severe heat waves, dust storms, and high salinity levels, led to migration of (3,000) families from eight Iraqi governorates.
He adds that University of Kerbala has hosted various conferences discussing ways to address such problems facing Iraq, and Karbala in particular, so as to achieve sustainability.
