University of Kerbala Launches its Fourth Conference on Reducing Extremism and Terrorism

Strategic Studies Centre / University of Kerbala, in cooperation with Popular Mobilization Forces, represented by Abbas Combat Division, organizes its fourth scientific conference to reduce extremism.
The conference, which has been held under the slogan, “Strengthening the role of moderation in reducing extremism and terrorism,” aims at assisting relevant parties in developing strategies to combat extremism and terrorism.
The conference discusses (30) papers by researchers from various Iraqi universities and research centres.
The conference activities attended by President of University of Kerbala, Prof. Dr. Basim K. Nile, vice president for scientific affairs, Prof. Dr. Najm Abdul Hussein Al-Janabi, head of Higher Education Committee of Karbala Provincial Council, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohsen Al-Kinani, commander of Abbas Combat Division, Sheikh Maitham Al-Zaidi, and security and academic figures.
President of the University, Prof. Dr. Basim K. Nile, says that there is a great responsibility of universities and scientific research centres to confront extremist thought, through their capabilities to educate and alert danger of this thought infiltrating social system, adding that extremist groups make a living on area of ​​intellectual desertification that prevails in some societies, stressing the necessity of working to promote values ​​of tolerance and pluralism and encourage moderation values.
For his part, Director of the Centre , Prof. Dr. Ahmed Kadhim Al-Yasari, states that the conference comes in response to call of Prime Minister, Mr. Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, stressing necessity of organizing scientific conferences that highlight danger of terrorism and extremist ideology. He highlights recommendations of the conference which may help Iraqi decision-makers to develop policies and strategies contribute to reduce phenomenon of terrorism and intellectual extremism.
