" The Critical Reference of Dr. Mahmoud Al-Bustan. – A Reading of His Qur’anic Studies"

After tracing the Qur’anic studies of Al-Bustani in order to Determine
his critical reference, raises a number of questions That this research attempts to answer: What is the concept of Critical reference? What are the representations of Dr. Mahmoud Al-Bustani’s critical reference? What are the foundations that Made Al-Bustani a critic? Was this reference monotypic or Mixed? How does he understand his use of critical terms and Methodologies? Did his critical concepts apply in his Qur’anic Studies or did Al-Bustani deviate from them? It can be said that Al-Bustani, who made literary criticism his starting point at the Beginning of his intellectual activity, was able to establish a stable Vision that does not deny the past, nor does it shy away from The present by mastering other languages, through his exposure To modern critical methods in their original contexts, so that he Could have a balanced and moderate reference that directs him Correctly in his studies, which were primarily focused on the
Qur’anic text and the sayings of the infallible (peace be upon Them) This study has attempted to present three chapters Answering the mentioned questions. The first chapter discusses Something of Al-Bustani’s life and his cultural formation, Represented by his insights and opinions, as well as shedding light on his knowledge achievements to place the reader before This diverse and rich work. Meanwhile, the second chapter Focused on the general concepts that surrounded Al-Bustani’s Critical discourse, as these concepts form an important part of His thought, which constituted his critical reference. Due to the Significance of these concepts in determining the cognitive Frameworks that shaped this reference, we aimed in the final third Chapter to examine the most important manifestations that Appeared in his Quranic studies specifically through two main Axes. In the first, Al-Bustani focused on paying attention to the Context surrounding the text, and what influences this attention Is the guidance of the reference towards specific points that often Lie outside the texts. While the interest of the second of them Was represented in caring for the text itself, and what follows From this care in directing its specific epistemological references Towards the texts themselves to study their internal structures That constitute them, as manifested in the applied studies by Bustani specifically regarding the text of the Holy Quran. We Concluded this study with the most important results we reached In this regard, which are results that the studies that made Bustani’s critical discourse their focus did not mention.
