Rp-Terrorism in Hotel Mumbai Movie: A Critical Stylistic Analysis.pdf

The present study is mainly devoted to investigating how the linguistic choices chosen by the characters in the selected movie, namely, Hotel Mumbai (2018), reveal their ideologies concerning the notion of terrorism. To accomplish the aim of the current study, Jeffries‟ analytical tools (2010) of critical stylistic analysis is adopted to detect which critical stylistic tools are employed and the differences and similarities in the movie to reveal the notion of terrorism.
The results of the qualitative analysis of the data show that all textual-conceptual functions are employed in the movie to reflect ideologies regarding terrorism. They reveal that each character perceives and constructs the notion of terrorism almost similarly including the depiction of the attacks as a brutal and chaotic event. The tools Representing Actions/ Events / States and Naming and Describing are the most frequently used tools since they allow for the linguistic portrayal of events and essential for shaping the narrative and conveying the complexities of the terrorist attack. While the tools Exemplifying and Enumerating and Presenting Others’ Speech and Thoughts score the lowest frequency among the other tools due that a comprehensive list and presentation of other people’s words and ideas may not be given as much weight in the movie as immersive narrative and firsthand depiction of the events. Ultimately, the film portrays terrorism as a brutal and unrelenting act.
