Supplications in Nahj al-Balagha - A Study in the Light of Text Linguistics -

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the supplications (munajat) in Nahj al-Balagha by Imam Ali ibn Abi Ṭalib (peace be upon him), through the lens of modern Text Linguistics. Adopting the model proposed by Robert de Beaugrande and Wolfgang Dressler, which consists of seven textuality standards (cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, and intertextuality), the study aims to explore the textual and semantic structures of these spiritual texts. It also analyzes how linguistic devices contribute to building semantic connectivity and communicative functionality within the framework of religious discourse.
The research shows that the munajat passages exhibit strong internal cohesion through the use of reference, ellipsis, substitution, and conjunctions. They also maintain deep coherence via thematic and conceptual unity. The presence of intentionality is evident in the devotional orientation of the texts, while intertextuality is clearly demonstrated through their dense Qur’anic and prophetic references. The analysis further highlights the poetic and rhetorical richness of the texts, including the use of parallelism, rhythm, metaphor, and balanced structures. These features together contribute to their persuasive and emotional power.
