Verbal Collocations in Praise and Elegy Collection of Mohammed and his Honored Progeny by Seyed Selman Aal Tu'ma

Collocation is a lexical term that means a companying and concomitance the expression. Verbal collocations is a general linguistic phenomenon. It is considered one of the linguistic phenomenon in our Arabic language. Thus, our Arabic language is characterized by the accuracy and high styled collocation in choosing the collocation by expressions. Establishment of this term belongs to the linguist firth who called attention to this term. He means that we can predict coming the two collocated words due to the use, as well the extent of their suitability.
Therefore, the word ‘melt’ for example may collocate with words as iron, copper, gold, and silver, but it is not possible to collocate with words as skin or paper due to unsuitability between melting and the skin or paper materials. There are many names for this term according to the translation. Thus, some translated into ‘ compactness’, others into ‘alignment ‘, another into successive as well other multiple translations.
However, I chose Seyed Selman’s collection when my supervisor had suggested to me to study under the title verbal collocation. Hence, this study is considered the first for this collection due to its implication for many poetic witnesses to be practical examples for our research topic; that is the verbal collocation whether on the nominal level, verbal level, or the semantic level. So, the study contained a preface and three chapters where every chapter consisted of three sections.
The preface sheds the light on the term of collocation linguistically and terminologically; in addition to the opinions of the old scholars and the modern ones. This included old Arab scholars. He proved that this phenomenon was found in publications of old Arabs. Therefore, we found what supports this in their publications like Sibeywah, Al Jahidh, and other scholars ending with the old Arab scholars and the modern ones. This is in addition to the West scholars’ opinions. Then, we stated the poet’s life, origin, study, and writings including the collection under the investigation.
