This study investigates Queen Elizabeth II’s speeches on her daughters-in-law from a sociocognitive perspective. Queen Elizabeth II mentions her daughters-in-law in her speeches and public statements only when necessary or on significant occasions. She usually employs some linguistic and sociocognitive strategies when addressing her daughters-in-law. Therefore, the study aims to identify the types of contexts and their influence on constructing the meaning and communicative intention of the Queen’s speeches. It also aims to explore the linguistic and discursive strategies in the selected speeches. The study adopts a qualitative approach based on an eclectic model that is taken from Van Dijk (2001a; 2009a; 2012). (15) Extracts from (6) speeches have been selected as samples for analysis purposes. After analysing the selected data, findings revealed that lexicalisation, formal style and selective vocabulary are used in such a way that suits the royal protocol. Authoritative arguments legitimise her discourse, and with this element, the Queen relied on her position and status among the public and family members to strengthen the declamation. The speeches reflect power relations, a matter which is consistent with her role as the leader of the family and the country of Britain. Finally, the presence of expressive speech acts gives the impression that the Queen shares her emotions with the common people and is trying to be close to them to strengthen the bonds between the royal family and society.
